Tax audit due date 21 Oct 2026: what the CBDT extension means
CBDT moved the tax audit report deadline to 21 October and audit-case ITRs to 21 November 2026. Here is who it covers and what to do now.
If you run a small business, freelance, or are a partner in a firm, October has two dates that matter more than usual. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) moved both the tax audit report deadline and the income tax return (ITR) deadline for audited cases. Here is what changed, who it affects, and what everyone else should do.
What changed
According to news reports of the CBDT announcement made on 28 September 2026, for Assessment Year 2026-27 (income earned in FY 2025-26):
- Tax audit report: the due date moved from 30 September to 21 October 2026.
- ITR for applicable audit cases: the due date moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026.
That is three weeks of extra time for each step. As of today, the audit report date is only a few days away.
Who is this for?
The extension is for taxpayers whose accounts must be audited under the Income-tax Act. That can include companies, firms and some businesses and professionals. Being self-employed or a freelancer does not automatically mean you need an audit. Whether you do depends on factors like turnover or receipts and the scheme you opted for, so your chartered accountant is the right person to confirm.
Not covered: regular salaried individuals without an audit requirement. Their ITR due date was not extended by this announcement. Some special cases, such as transfer pricing, have their own dates, and reports differ on how they are treated, so check the official CBDT notification if that applies to you.
Other dates to keep in mind this month
Other compliance dates did not move with this extension. Business owners who deduct TDS should note that quarterly TDS statements for the July-September quarter are listed for 31 October. If you are not sure whether something is covered, assume the original date still holds until you see it in an official notice.
A practical example
Rohit runs a small trading business in Pune and his accountant has told him his books need an audit. Earlier, he was racing to hand over everything by 30 September. Now the audit report is due 21 October and his return by 21 November. The extra time helps, but only if the paperwork is ready:
- Bank statements for the full year, reconciled
- Sales and purchase invoices, GST returns
- Loan statements and EMI schedules
- Expense bills, including those paid in cash
- Receivables and payables lists
Rohit's accountant cannot finalise the audit if half the expenses are missing. An extension is not a reason to wait; it is a reason to finish cleanly.
What to do this week
- Ask your CA directly: "Am I in the audit category, and which date applies to me?"
- Send documents now: do not wait for the last day. Delays usually come from missing papers, not from the deadline itself.
- Separate personal and business spending: mixed UPI payments are the most common reason for messy books.
- Keep a list of what is pending: unpaid invoices, advances, and money you owe to suppliers.
- Check your Form 26AS/AIS for income and TDS entries that match your records.
- Do not assume interest is waived. The reports we found did not confirm any waiver of interest, so file as early as you reasonably can.
If you are a salaried person
This news probably does not change your date. Keep your Form 16, interest certificates, rent receipts and investment proofs organised, and file your return only after checking your AIS for mismatches.
This is general information, not financial advice. Please confirm dates and applicability with a qualified tax professional or the official Income Tax Department notice.
